Genre Continued....

Genres appeal to certain target audiences e.g soap opera's (TV, Eastenders,Coronation Street) and romantic comedies(Film, four weddings and a funeral, Sex and the city) tend to appeal mainly to women whereas action and horror movies(film, Saw, Fast and furious) mainly appeal to men. Genres tend to become 'tired' over time, with audiences becoming less interested. Christian Metz identified four phrases these are:
1. The initial phase
2. The classical phase
3.The declining phase
4. The parody phase
Example of Metz four phrases:
The Disaster Movie Genre
Initial- Airport
Classical- The Towering Inferno
Declining- Airport 80:The Concorde
Other clear examples are in the horror and western genres.
